Dessert Hopping in New Haven

Connecticut is just a train ride away from New York City, albeit a very long train ride. New Haven isn’t known to be a popular place for others to visit, unless they were looking to visit Yale University, because most of the area is pretty desolate and, unfortunately, not safe for tourists. Nevertheless, New Haven is a small town with so many food areas surrounding it that we just needed to visit.

Here are some of our dessert finds in New Haven:

  • Maison Mathis (304 Elm St, New Haven, CT 06511) 4.7/5

Looking for a dessert spot? Look no further than Maison Mathis, whose selection of delicious Belgian waffles will surely get you drooling. The interior of Maison Mathis is airy and bright, perfect for a group of friends or just to sit down, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. Their waffles are perfectly executed: they are crunchy on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside. The chocolate syrup and whipped cream on top was icing on the cake. Definitely worth a stop if you’re ever in the area.

  • Arethusa Farm Dairy (1020 Chapel St, New Haven, CT 06510) 5/5

Ice cream shops are pretty standard all around: they have a good selection of flavors and the ice cream melts in your mouth. Arethusa showed us that our way of thinking about ice cream is completely wrong. With only a small variety of flavors, including their delicious pumpkin ice cream with molasses, Arethusa manages to pack in tons of flavor and creaminess in each bite of ice cream. To make matters even better, for only $3.25 you get two large scoops of ice cream and you can even mix the flavors. Affordable and delicious!

  • Donut Crazy of New Haven (290 York St, New Haven, CT 06511) 3.9/5

Tucked away in the side streets of New Haven is a very cozy and quaint donut shop that boasts a variety of unique varieties of donuts, which are also huge in size. We highly doubt anyone would be able to finish a whole donut by themselves. Yes, it’s filled with sugary goodness. Yes, you may end up regretting your choice of downing the donut. But it’s worth it. We had the apple pie donut, which was filled with an apple pie syrup with pieces of apples. It was absolutely delicious, but make sure you grab a friend a split one.
