Dipping Through Trader Joe’s

Summer means backyard parties, game night with friends, and rummaging through the refrigerator for a bite to eat after a long night of binge drinking. While we make our best efforts to keep up our summer bodies, it gets harder and harder to do when you’re going out on the weekends or having friends over. That’s why having a fridge stocked with healthy options can keep you off of that treadmill for an extra 30 minutes. One of the things we tend to binge-eat include chips and dip – dips like salsa, guacamole, and hummus. We checked out out local Trader Joe’s, notorious for healthier options, to try their eclectic mix of dips.

Here’s how some of them stacked up:

  • Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Chunky Guacamole 3.6/5

Fresh guacamole is our favorite guilty pleasure, but we rarely find the time to make our own and often resort to buying pre-packed guacamole that perishes within a few days. Trader Joe’s healthier alternative to guacamole offers greek yogurt as a base for the guacamole, which does tend to keep the guacamole fresh for a few more days. The taste is very similar to guacamole and we believe that in a blind taste test most people wouldn’t notice the difference of substituting greek yogurt in this dip. However, being guacamole addicts we missed having chunks of avocado on our salted tortilla chips and felt that the greek yogurt made the consistency of the dip slightly thinner.


  • Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt Dip 2.9/5

This dip is interesting, to say the least. One bite will give you a very sour and creamy taste, reminiscent of curdled milk. We were disappointed since we usually like spinach dips, especially spinach and artichoke dips. We believe that the spinach paired with the kale and greek yogurt made for a tangy bite that we weren’t really expecting (and we’re probably sure others won’t be expecting either). Although healthy, we’d recommend saving those calories for something else.


  • Trader Joe’s Three Layered Hummus 4.0/5

You can’t really go wrong with hummus, and with three layers you’re bound to find a flavor profile that suits your palate. We enjoyed eating through this container of three layered hummus because it contains an original flavor, roasted red pepper flavor, and cilantro flavor. We personally loved the roasted red pepper flavor but both the cilantro and original flavor are worthy competitors. The taste and calorie count is similar to your favorite Sabra brand of hummus at your local grocery store. So while it may not be a healthier option than your local hummus brand, it’d definitely cheaper than buying three different types of Sabra varieties.


  • Trader Joe’s Extra Hot Habanero Ghost Pepper Salsa 4.2/5

One of the things that we love about salsa is that most are a low calorie and usually fat-free option to topping your salted corn tortilla chip. That being said, this salsa was amazing – it was spicy, tasted fresh, and light. Our only criticism is that we tend to prefer chunkier salsa, like the Tostitos brand salsa you can find at your local grocery store snack isle. Nonetheless, for anyone looking to add spice to their dips, look no further as this dip is quite spicy and may not be handled well for a novice.

If you don’t have a local Trader Joe’s, don’t fret. We recommend actually skipping Trader Joe’s altogether since we weren’t completely impressed by any of these dips. Instead, run to your nearest grocery store and grab a bag of baked Tostitos Scoop tortilla chips (much less calories than the traditional non-baked version with very little difference in taste) and a bottle of your favorite Tostitos salsa (most, if not all, are similar in nutrition to Trader Joe’s salsa) for a tasty and healthy snack option.
